Artist's
Statement:
Painting faces, challenges and intrigues me. Each face tells a wordless
story about that individual's emotional reality. Beyond the physical details
of the faces I paint, I hope to get a glimpse of the human soul -- that
which is, at the same time, absolutely unique and universal. Still life with flowers is another recurring theme.
Besides my interest in exploring their form, texture, and colour, the real
subject of these paintings is the encounter itself -- the impact the flowers
have on my senses and emotions. I am influenced most by Matisse's visual celebration
of colour, line, and pattern, Van Gogh's great empathy and intense honesty,
and Chagall's playfulness and his ability to paint emotion, especially
love. I have also been deeply affected by many wonderful
stories and picture books I loved as a child. As an adult the powerful
art of Maurice Sendak inspires my fantasy paintings of children, cats,
birds, and crocodile creatures.

Cards:
Rae Maté makes her own line of art cards. These hand-made, hand-signed
blank cards are suitable for sending greetings for all occasions, and make
unique and welcome gifts. They can also be displayed in a 5 X 7 inch frame.
Each card features a photograph, taken by the artist,
of one of her original paintings. The photo is trimmed and glued on to
white cards made from recycled paper. Each comes with an envelope in a
plastic sleeve. The colours are rich and true to the original work.
There are over 100 different cards available in the series,
including images of women, children, still life/flowers, playful cats and
crocodile creatures. The cost of each card is $3.50 plus postage. No GST.
